Concrete Blocks: Less Known Facts

Categories Construction Materials

Concrete blocks are the blocks made of concrete. It can be of two types:-

  • Solid
  • Hollow

Manufacturing Process of Concrete Blocks

The production of concrete blocks consists of four basic processes: mixing, molding, curing and cubing. To get the details of these processes click here.

Solid Concrete Blocks

Concrete blocks having voids less than 25% are known as solid concrete blocks. They are rectangular in shape and are available in different sizes such as 200 x 400 x 200 mm for 200 mm thick walls and 100 x 400 x 200 mm for 100 mm thick wall. They are easily available in the market and they are also manufactured locally in every part of India.

Uses:-

  1. They are widely used for pavements.
  2. They can be used for constructing walls.

Advantages:-

  1. Faster Construction- it does not require much plastering which reduces the time of construction.
  2. Cost Reduction- less use of plastering results in saving of construction materials.
  3. Resistance to Weathering- they do not absorb much water and hence they are more resistant to weathering.
  4. Better Strength- they are almost 3 to 4 times stronger than clay bricks which increase the strength of the structure.
  5. No Wastage during Transportation- they do not break while transportation due to its high strength.
  6. Excellent Insulation- they maintain the temperature of the inside of the house and also acts as a good sound dampener.

Disadvantages:-

  1. Aesthetics- they don’t give an appealing look in comparison to the painted brick wall.
  2. Weight- They increase the weight of the structure and hence a better foundation is required.
  3. Cost- its cost is more than clay bricks.

Hollow Concrete Blocks

Concrete blocks having voids more than 25% are known as hollow concrete blocks. They are available in two sizes namely full size which is rectangular in shape having two cores and half size which are cubical in shape and having one core. They are available in different sizes such as 7.5*7.5*15, 16*8*8 (approximately) etc. They are easily available in the market and also can be produced locally in every part of India.
