India is currently the world’s 3rd largest producer of crude steel. India is expected to become the 2nd largest producer of crude steel in the world soon. Crude steel production in India grew at the rate of 5% per annum from 74.29 mtpa in 2011-12 to 89.79 mtpa in 2015-16.

Steel Authority of India (SAIL), Tata Steel Lmt., JSW Steel Lmt., Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (Vizag Steel), Jindal Steel & Power Lmt., ESSAR Steel were the top Steel Companies in India with the production of 40.376 mt in the period of April-December 2016-17.

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL)

First in the list of Top Steel Companies in India is the largest state-owned steel-making company based in Delhi.

Some of the key highlights of the SAIL are:-

  • The company has achieved a turnover of Rs. 49,180 crores during the Financial Year 2016-17. It was 14% higher from the previous year.
  • SAIL has increased the production of Hot Metal from 15.72 Million Tonnes (MT) to 15.73 Million Tonnes (MT) in the period 2016-17.
  • The company has seen a remarkable increase in the production of Crude Steel from 14.29 MT to 14.50 MT in the year 2016-17.
  • The company has produced record-breaking of 13.87 MT Saleable Steel in the year 2016-17.
  • SAIL has shown significant growth of 9% in the production of Continuously-Cast Steel from the last year.
  • The company has seen a growth of 1% in Sinter production respectively.

 

Tata Steel Limited

Second in the list of Top Steel Companies in India is a subsidiary of Tata Group. It is headquartered at Mumbai, Maharashtra.

  • The company has achieved a turnover of Rs. 53,261 crores during the financial year 2016-17 which is greater than the previous year.
  • Tata Steel has commissioned a new steel plant this year of capacity 3 MnTPA in Kalinganagar for production of Flat Steel products.
  • Total Crude Steel production stood at 11.68 MnT. It has sold 7.7 MnT Flat Steel products and 3.3 MnT Long Steel products this year.
  • Jamshedpur Steel Plant of the company is first in India to be rated as Platinum by GreenCo.
  • The Company has filed 870 patents this year out of which 360 patents are granted.
  • Tata Steel has more 5000 supplier base and more than 12000 channel partners.

 

JSW Steel Limited

Third in the list of Top Steel Companies in India is a flagship company of JSW Group. It is headquartered at Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Some of the key highlights of the JSW Steel are:-

  • JSW Steel has achieved Rs. 60,536 Crores revenue from Operations which is 32% higher than the previous year.
  • Total Crude Steel production stood at 15.8 MnT which is 26% higher than the previous year.
  • Saleable Steel sales have seen a growth of 20% with 14.7 MnT of production.
  • The company has produced 10.97 MnT of Flat Steel products, 3.06 MnT of Long Steel products, and 0.76 MnT of Semis this year.
  • JSW Steel has a total of seven manufacturing facilities located in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.
  • The company has produced 5.06 MnT of Value-Added Steel which shows the increase of 17%.

 

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (Vizag Steel)

Fourth in the list of Top Steel Companies in India is a Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Steel. Its headquarters is located in Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

  • The production of Value-Added Steel stood at 2.638 MnT which is 20% higher than the previous year.
  • The RINL-VSP is the first Integrated Steel Plant of the company to be certified for ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2001 and OHSAS 18001:2007 standards.

 

Jindal Steel & Power Limited

Fifth in the list of Top Steel Companies in India is a part of OP Jindal Group. Its headquarters is located in Delhi, India.

Some of the key highlights of the JSPL are:-

  • The company’s turnover for the year 2016-17 was 25,334 Crores.
  • JSWL is equipped with 8.1 MnT capacity Steel-making Plant and 9MnT capacity Pellet-making Plant.

ESSAR Steel

Last in the list of Top Steel Companies in India is a part of Essar Global Fund Limited. Its headquarters is located in Mumbai, India.

Some of the key highlights of the ESSAR Steel are:-

  • Essar Steel has a capacity of 14 MTPA Steel production with 10 MTPA integrated facilities in India, 20 MTPA Pellet facilities and 4 MTPA Steel Processing facilities.
  • This company claims to have been a zero waste company.
