Choosing the appropriate flooring for office or home is an overwhelming task as everyone wants their home or office to look their best.

For every individual, the choices seem endless, and for most of the time, you believe all the tiles look same. However, it is not true because many colours, finishes and patterns may appear similar, but manufacturers do not create the same tiles.

In earlier days, homeowners had to choose from limited options; however, nowadays a homeowner can give every room of the house an indulgent, rustic, and elegant impression by using any of the astounding variety of tiles.

However, many times homeowners ask me different questions about the tiles. Let us now discuss them one by one:

i) How Tiles are made?

ii) What are the Different Types of Tiles? and

iii) How to choose Floor Tiles

How Tiles are made?

  • Manufacturers mix raw materials such as clay, sand, and many more to obtain tiles¬†mixture.
  • He then works out this mixture in its unfired state into the desired shape into the semi-finalised product.
  • After that, manufacturers fire it at a high temperature depending on its composition and type such as glazed, unglazed, matte or glossy.

Different Types of Tiles

Normally, you will find these three types of tiles in the market:-

  • Ceramic Tiles
  • Porcelain Tiles, and
  • Vitrified Tiles

Point to note:-

  • Ceramic tiles are available in various designs and finishes such as matte, glazed and glossy. They are cheaper than vitrified tiles.
  • All ceramic tiles are vitrified to a certain extent and can be used in fewer traffic areas.
  • Porcelain tiles are a variety of vitrified ceramic tiles, but more potent than ceramic tiles.
  • Vitrified tiles are both ceramic and porcelain tiles subjected to a different burning process due to which they have a protective glass layer. Also, vitrified tiles are stronger and more durable. These tiles are generally used in public spaces.

How to Choose Floor Tiles?

The following point should be considered before choosing floor tiles:-

Rigidity/Place of Use

  • Choose Vitrified Tiles where rigidity is the most important factor (for ex. outdoor floors)
  • Ceramic tiles are in places with least rigidity is required such as Wall Tiles.
  • Porcelain tiles are used where medium rigidity is required such as floor tiles.

One more thing to note down before choosing tiles is PEI Rating. PEI is an international standard which measures the degree to which the surface of a tile will withstand wear.

Accordingly, on a scale of five, for bathroom tiles, one or two rating is adequate. Whereas, for tiling a kitchen, entrance hall, living area or passage, three or four PEI rating is sufficient. Make sure to check the PEI ratings of a tile before you purchase it.

Slip Resistance

Choose the Tile which is most slip resistance for Bathrooms & Kitchens.

Area

Tiles come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colours so, if your room is tiny, then it will not look good with large dark tiles as this will make the room appear even smaller. But large tiles work exceptionally in a vast and open space.

Also, when choosing the tile colour, you must consider fixtures, fittings and the wall colour of the room.

Therefore, before finalising anything, shop around to see what sizes, shapes, colours and patterns are available to make the right choice.
